    Seasonal Field Technician (6-month position)

    This seasonal position provides support to the mosquito surveillance systems, as well as the larviciding program.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    1)    Performs mosquito landing rate counts, sweep net counts and other counts as appropriate.
    2)    Collects mosquitoes from CDC light, gravid, BG, and other traps for identification and disease testing.
    3)    Maintains the proper operation of assigned traps in the field.
    4)    Identifies new locations for landing rate counts, sampling and traps.
    5)    Inspects for mosquitoes in assigned areas and larvicides or adulticides as necessary and appropriate.
    6)    Identifies new locations for larviciding and keeps an accurate record oflarval sites in the database system.
    7)    Performs inspections by helicopter as necessary.
    8)    Ensures that surveillance data is properly recorded in the database system.
    9)    Ensures control materials are properly accounted for in the database system.
    10)    Complies with all pesticide label requirements when handling and applying control materials.
    11)    Investigates citizen complaints when requested to do so.
    12)    Conducts household inspections and treatments for container species when necessary.
    13)    Responsible for maintaining and reporting an accurate accounting of control material usage.
    14)    Works with research department to assess the efficacy of treatments.
    15)    Communicates findings to the Field Technician Supervisor.


    Must have a high school diploma and a strong interest in public health through mosquito control.

    Required Knowledge/Skills

    Basic knowledge of mosquito biology and control. Proficiency with computers and mobile technologies a must. Must be able to record, enter, retrieve and interpret electronic data. Must have a valid driver’s license.

    Work Environment

    The work occasionally involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g. working with chemical insecticides, paints, and solvents. Protective clothing or gear, such as masks, respirators, goggles, gloves etc., may be worn. Frequent weekend, evening and early morning work will be required. Exposure to large numbers of mosquitoes is likely. Exposure to the elements and possible exposure to discomfort caused by heavy lifting may be experienced. Risks involved with flying in aircraft are possible.
