- CMCD provides an opportunity for 8th graders to be scientists for a week. During the course of the week, students are introduced to a wide range of subject matter, including mosquito biology, mosquito control history in Florida, a parts per million lab, and finally ending the week with a bioassay lab determining the level of toxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) to mosquito larvae.
- A bioassay is a laboratory procedure to determine the potency of a substance using a living organism as a test subject. For CMCD's Bti bioassay, students determine what concentration of Bti will kill 50% to 90% of a predetermined number of larvae. So, what concentration of Bti is enough to kill a mosquito larva? This is the problem that is solved with the Bti bioassay.
